Nature & Madness
Nature & Madness is the atmospheric indie folk-rock project of Ryan Pickop. While the project is often a solo effort, full band and duo performances are common. Ryan's music is rooted in Americana, rooted in the Earth. Challenging without being confrontational, we are offered narratives vague enough to feel they could be about us, and specific enough to know they are intimate and real.
Named after Deep Ecologist Paul Shepard's essay "Nature and Madness", Ryan draws much of his emotive songwriting from the Deep Ecology philosophy and movement.
"we must stand apart from the conventions of history, even while using the record of the past, for the idea of history is itself a western invention whose central theme is the rejection of habitat." -Paul Shepard, "Nature and Madness".
Ryan currently lives in Fayetteville, AR with his wife and two small children.

"Ryan's music does have a medicinal quality, provided you are willing to sit down and succumb to the pain of having the wound cleaned. There is a depth (and an astringency) to his songwriting that begins to show itself after listening to only a few lines. Often those lines are enough to ruminate on by themselves." -Bohemia Magazine
